Your ICP Is a Control Panel: Not a Slide
Most teams write Ideal Customer Profiles once, file them in Notion, and wonder why outbound still feels random. Here's why configuring ICP in Brainess is the lever that makes everything else sharper, and how to set each step.

Somewhere in your company there is a beautiful ICP document.
It has a persona name. Maybe a stock photo. A paragraph about "pain points" that could describe half the internet. It was workshopped in Q1, applauded in the all-hands, and then never opened again.
Meanwhile your pipeline is built from whatever the last tool spit out.
That gap (between the slide and the work) is where deals go to die. An Ideal Customer Profile only matters if it can steer research, lead lists, and outreach in real time. In Brainess, ICP isn't a PDF. It's a control panel.
Why a configured ICP beats a written one
When ICP lives only in docs:
- Hunting is vibes-based ("this logo looks right")
- Outreach is generic ("hope this finds you well")
- New hires invent their own version of "our customer"
- You can't explain why a company made the list
When ICP is configured in the product:
- Every hunt starts from the same definition of fit
- Explanations cite the signals you actually chose
- Personas, company filters, and locations stay in sync
- You can tune one dial on Monday and feel it by Tuesday
A slide describes the customer. A control panel selects them.
That's the difference between strategy theater and GTM that compounds.

A tour of the ICP control panel
Open Settings → ICP. You'll see three stacks that answer three questions:
- Who do we talk to inside the company?
- Which companies are even in play?
- Where do those people and companies live?
Get those right and Synapse stops guessing. Here's how to configure each step without turning it into a six-week project.
1. Target personas: who answers the phone
Start with Job titles. Type freely or pick suggestions: titles like VP Sales, Head of Sales, SDR Manager, AEs. Don't boil the ocean; pick the roles that actually own the problem you solve.
Then tighten with Seniorities: VP, Head, Director, Manager. This is how you avoid matching every "Sales" string in LinkedIn and landing on interns or board advisors by accident.
Rule of thumb: if you wouldn't take a meeting with that title, don't put it in the panel.
Personas are the human filter. Without them, company fit still dumps you into the wrong inbox.
2. Target companies: the playing field
This is where vague ICPs usually fall apart. In Brainess you make it concrete:
- Industries: e.g. SaaS, B2B software, revenue operations tech. Be specific enough that a stranger could disagree with you.
- Company size (employees) (use the presets (1–10, 11–50, 51–200…) or hit + Custom when your reality is messier. The example above lands on a working range like 10–10,000) wide enough to hunt, narrow enough to mean something.
- Annual revenue: same idea. Presets from under $1M to $100M+, or a custom band like $1M–$100M when that's how you sell.
Size and revenue aren't vanity metrics. They're proxies for budget, buying process, and whether your motion even fits.
If everything is selected, nothing is. Prefer a sharp band you can defend in standup.
3. Locations: where the work (and buyers) sit
Geography still matters: time zones, compliance, language, and "we only sell where we can support." Configure Locations for the people and companies you actually want in pipeline.
Skip this and you'll burn cycles on perfect ICP-fit logos that can never become customers. Fill it in and Synapse respects the map as seriously as the firmographics.
Save changes: then let it steer the week
Hit Save changes in the top right. That isn't a polite form submit: it's the moment your ICP becomes live context for hunting, research, and drafts.
A useful weekly ritual:
- Glance at last week's meetings
- Ask which ICP dials predicted them
- Nudge one persona, one industry, or one size band
- Save: and run the next hunt against the new truth
Ten minutes. No offsite required.
The teams that win aren't the ones with the prettiest ICP slide. They're the ones whose ICP runs the machine.
